Shuttler Busanan bows out but Pornpawee progresses

Defending women's singles champion Busanan Ongbamrungphan crashed out in the badminton quarter-finals yesterday.

The top-seeded Thai lost to Gregoria Mariska Tunjung of Indonesia 22-17, 20-22, 17-21 at Axiata Arena at Bukit Jalil National Sports Complex in Kuala Lumpur.

Busanan was the only Thai player to lose in the last-eight round yesterday.

Third seed Pornpawee Chochuwong is now the Kingdom's sole hope in the women's singles after she beat Sarah Joy Barredo of the Philippines 21-13, 21-6 to reach the semis.

Pornpawee next faces home hope Goh Jin Wei.

Favourites and world No.8 Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai cruised into the last eight of the mixed doubles after beating Alvin Morada and Alyssa Yasbel Leonardo of the Philippines 21-19, 21-17.

They are expected to have a much tougher fight against Chan Peng Soon and Cheah Yee See of Malaysia in the last four today.

Bodin Isara and Savitree Amitrapai joined their teammates in the semis after a 21-12, 21-15 win over Hafiz Faisal and Shella Devi Aulia of Indonesia.

Sapsiree then teamed up with Puttita Supajirakul in the women's doubles, and the top seeds beat Chow Mei Kuan and Lee Meng Yean of Malaysia 21-9, 21-12 to reach the last four.

Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai also advanced with a 21-7, 21-12 win over Vietnam's Nguyen Thi Sen and Huyen Le Thu.

In the men's singles, second seed Khosit Phetpradap beat Phone Pyae Naing of Myanmar 21-8, 21-4 to advance.

Men's doubles fourth seeds Kittinupong Kedren and Dechapol beat Lee Jian Liang and Jason Wong Guang Liang of Singapore 21-10, 21-10, while Bodin and Niphitphon Phuangphuapet survived a test against Berry Angriawan and Hardianto Hardianto of Indonesia before winning 21-18, 18-21, 21-14.

The women's team retained their title on Thursday.

Thai shuttlers are hoping to improve on their overall performance from two years ago in Singapore where they won two golds and two bronzes.
