Shutterstock, the US-based company that licences its vast library of photographs and video footage to publications, paid out £2,580,000 to its UK contributors last year.

According to the earnings report on its website infographic, it meant that Britain was the fifth largest market for the company in 2014.

That could well be bigger still next time around because Shutterstock paid £22m in January to acquire the London-based photographic agency, Rex Features.

Shutterstock was founded in 2003 by Jon Oringer and has a market capitalisation of £1.4bn. Earlier this month, it announced that it now has more than 50m images in its collection.

The company said at the time (10 March) that its 70,000-plus contributors had been paid more than $250m (£170m) since it was founded, including more than $80m (£54m) in 2014.
