Shutters down, quiet and eerie - What life is like in Skegness out-of-season

During the summer, Skegness is a town full of life - tourists from all over the country flock to the Lincolnshire coast to enjoy the beach, fish and chips and all the rides at Fantasy Island.

There are ice cream stalls, donkeys and plenty of other things to spend money on when the sun is shining.

However, during the colder months, Skegness is a very different town - with many businesses being forced to shut up shop until the sunshine returns.

I have only been to Skegness during the summer before. I'm from Lincoln, so naturally, I grew up visiting the town during the summer holidays, but it was never somewhere I visited out-of-season.

So, I decided to head out on a cold November day. It felt bizarre putting my winter coat on to go to Skegness.

Of course, I had an idea of what it was going to be like. Skegness has a seasonal economy, so I'm not going to pretend I was gobsmacked that there wasn't an abundance of people in the town queuing up for ice cream.

Locals have told me before that it turns into a ghost town and it was noticeable how true that actually was.

It was eerie visiting a place I associate with being full of happy people on their holidays so destitute and lonely.

When I looked up at the empty rollercoasters at Fantasy Island, it felt like they had been abandoned.

I am sure people who live in Skegness will be reading this and rolling their eyes, because this isn't new information for them.

Also, I am not suggesting by any stretch of the imagination that Skegness being less busy in the winter is necessarily a bad thing.

Sheila and Michael Poxen, from Worksop, are regular out-of-season visitors. They said they like being by the sea, and the weather doesn't change that.

Michael, 73, said: "Our favourite spot is Huttoft Beach. It's lovely there."

Sheila, 71, added: "We like the peace and quiet. I like being at the seaside even when it is raining. It doesn't matter to me."

Perhaps it gives couples like Sheila and Michael a chance to enjoy Skegness without crowds of people and lots of noise.

Perhaps they want to be able to enjoy fish and chips without having to battle through a queue, and a greyer sky is something they can deal with.

What was clear, however, was how many businesses shut up shop. Shutters were down at many ice cream stores. It feels like a big ask for any business to rely on trade from the summer to see them through the whole year.

There are clearly pros and cons to a less hectic Skegness, but one thing that is certain is that the town changes this time of year.
