Shutters battered at Sainsbury's shop in Peterlee during failed ram-raid

A Sainsbury's shop in County Durham was targeted in a failed ram-raid overnight.

The shutters of the Sainsbury's Local shop on Grampian Drive in Peterlee were severely damaged on Sunday morning after the attempted break-in.

The scene of destruction was caused by a silver Ford Focus being repeatedly reversed into the shutters at around 5am on Sunday.

The burglars failed to get inside and fled empty-handed. The vehicle then sped off along Grampian Drive towards Pennine Drive.

Tape has now been put up in front of the shop which remained closed on Sunday.

Durham Constabulary is appealing for information to trace the would-be burglars.

Officers are studying CCTV footage from the area as part of the investigation, but are also appealing for witnesses who saw anything suspicious before or after the attempted burglary to come forward.

Detective sergeant David Airey, of Peterlee CID, said: “We would appeal for anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area before the incident, or who saw a silver Ford Focus being driven away afterwards, to get in touch with us as soon as possible.”

The ram-raid is the second one to happen in the North East this week.

A Best One shop , on North Crescent, in Stakeford , Northumberland , was targeted in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Police say they believe three men in dark clothing used a flat-bed truck to damage the front of the shop, but failed to access the ATM machine.

The vehicle was later found abandoned nearby.
