Shtayyeh Instructs Cabinet to Implement Decisions on Terminating Agreements

Palestinian Authority (PA) Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh instructed his cabinet members to implement the decision taken earlier this week regarding halting ties with Israel and the US.

“Israel has breached the international law and violated all the agreements signed with us, whether the political, security, economic, and legal agreements. From now on, we will no longer abide by these agreements,” Shtayyeh stated.

Earlier this week, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas declared he was terminating all agreements with Israel and the United States, including security cooperation, over Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s promise to annex parts of the West Bank.

“The announcement of the annexation of Palestinian lands and the imposition of Israeli sovereignty over the settlements is a violation of our signed agreements with Israel, a violation of international law and international legitimacy, and a threat to regional and international security,” the PM added.

Security coordination embarked on with the PA in 1993, in which Oslo Accords and their annexations stipulated forming a security committee to attain cooperation in civil and security fields.

This cooperation seeks to ban any attacks against Israel from the Palestinian side. From here, this cooperation is essential to Israelis because it foils 20 percent of plotted operations. It is also vital to Palestinians who aim for the superior national interest through preventing these operations and avoiding Israeli military retaliation.

The PA announced the termination of security coordination a couple of times before. However, it remained active on the ground.

The website Makan News reported that the PA notified Israeli official channels about prompt termination of security coordination in all its forms and on all levels. Yet, this doesn’t permit violent practices in the West Bank, the PA affirmed.

Israeli media stated that the message was delivered by PA Minister of Civil Affairs Hussein al-Sheik accompanied by other Palestinian officials to the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories.
