Shrimps, the label launched by designer Hannah Weiland only last year, already has quite the scene. Weiland is behind the brightly-coloured faux-fur coats much loved by fashion editors, and shows no signs of losing her spot as insider favourite. The proof? A queue of fashion people for the brand’s presentation on Friday at London Fashion Week. With presentations a more casual, drop-in affair than the bums-on-seats catwalk shows, that is practically unheard of. Arguably, that club-like queueing was merited.
This presentation was an ode to the Wizard of Oz’s Emerald City, with glitter stalagmites, models with 70s hair and clothes partly inspired by German expressionist Otto Dix. An odd combination, perhaps, but just like a neon colour palatte and faux fur, it’s one that works. Coats were made of cord and PVC, as well as the Shrimps trademark fluff. The big news was that Weiland – wafting about in dungarees and lucite heels, with enviable baby-blonde curls down to her waist – has gone beyond coats to a full ready-to-wear collection. There were jumpers, scarves and – here’s something you never knew you wanted – a glitter kilt. All in all, a fun, wearable, make-you-smile collection that – yes – is well worth queuing up for.
