Jurgen Klopp has given several of the club's standout prospects another chance to impress, with Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott, Yasser Larouci and Neco Williams all starting. However, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino are both on the bench as the Reds protect a spectacular record of 15 wins in their last 16 matches.
Shrewsbury upset Bristol City to reach this stage of the competition, yet the club are currently five games without a win in League One and have dropped to 16th in the table. Follow all the action live:
Man-of-the-match Josh Laurent is speaking to BBC after the final whistle:
“It shows our character. But before the game we believed we could win it, never mind draw it. We’ve got great belief in that dressing room – the pressure was on them, not us. At half-time, the gaffer just told us to believe. He said we’d get chances and he was right. I can’t wait for the replay, unbelievable. It’s something everyone dreams of.”
And there goes the full-time whistle. What a performance from Shrewsbury's players, who did so well to come back after that gut-wrenching own goal at the start of the second half. Klopp called on his star players, but it was Laurent and Cummings who changed the game and Shrewsbury will treasure a return tie at Anfield. The players celebrate as though they've won and the fans are in ecstasy too, storming onto the pitch the minute the referee blows.
Shrewsbury may have gone five games without a win in League One, but they've held the European champions and runaway Premier League leaders at New Meadow.
90+3 mins: But suddenly Laurent breaks free down the right, Cummings is lingering at the back post, but rather than crossing the midfielder angles a shot towards Adrian's near post. He's so close to wrong-footing the goalkeeper, who just about manages to palm the ball away.
90 mins: Another smash and grab chance for Liverpool goes begging and this time it's Salah who's guilty. Firmino again runs free, picking Salah out in space with a chipped ball, but the Egyptian's glancing header streaks just wide of the far post. Shrewsbury's defenders are exhausted now and suddenly the momentum has turned.
88 mins: Roberto Firmino has come on for Minamino. Almost immediately he's able to inflict a heartbreaking defeat on Shrewsbury, breaking into the box down the right, but the goalkeeper beats his under-struck shot away. The ball comes to a stop just outside the six-yard-box though and Jones charges in to slide home the rebound. But just as the teenager gets his foot to it, Williams hurls himself into the challenge to clear the danger and receives a bout of cramp for his efforts.
87 mins: Shrewsbury are appealing for a penalty after Love's cross flicks up and strikes Fabinho on the arm. It deflected onto him from such close range, though, and there was little the Brazilian could do to get out the way.
84 mins: Again Liverpool are rocking. Larouci is bustled off the ball by the fantastic Laurent and after misjudging a ball flighted ball over his head, Williams is relieved to see the linesman's flag go up.
82 mins: The momentum is all with Shrewsbury at the moment and it's Laurent again who's the driving force, barrelling down the right-wing before Larouci leaps in to make the clearance. The game is really opening up now.
79 mins: Emergency measures for Klopp as Salah is called back from his warm-up. Liverpool can hardly afford a replay with such a busy fixture schedule ahead of them and it's centre-back Matip who makes way.
It's Cummings again! It's an unglamorous hoof up the pitch towards the striker from the goalkeeper. Lovren and Matip make an absolute hash of the loose ball, Cummings collects, spins away and then clinically slides the ball past Adrian into the bottom corner. Liverpool have been complacent throughout this game, and now they've been punished.
68 mins: Laurent has been so impressive this half for Shrewsbury and the focal point of almost every attack. He drives forward from the halfway line, breezing past Liverpool's sluggish midfield, and plays a tantalising ball through. However, it's just a fraction overhit and Adrian collects. Then it's Love who charges forwards, but his cross from the right-wing is cleared by a sliding Matip.
Moments later Laurent is brought down by a rash tackle from Larouci and after a lengthy delay the referee points to the spot. It looked as though first contact may have been made just outside the area, however, there is no VAR and it's a golden chance for Shrewsbury to get back in it.
62 mins: Another sloppy piece of play by Liverpool goes unpunished. Now it's the normally unflappable Matip who inexplicably gives the ball away with a terrible pass. Josh Laurent has space and time to shoot but he snatches at it and can only watch from the edge of the box as it drifts wide.
60 mins: Lang is brought off almost immediately after missing that chance and there are a few boos from fans who disagree with the manager's decision. He's certainly been one of the biggest threats for the Shrews.
57 mins: Another opportunity goes begging! Shrewsbury really only have themselves to blame. Lang races through another mediocre offside trap, he's all alone in acres of space, but with Adrian closing down the angle he can't get enough power on his shot and it's tipped wide by the goalkeeper.
55 mins: Laurent has pushed forwards in this half and is picked out by Goss on the edge of the box. His shot fizzes wide of the far post, though. Moments later Liverpool break. First it's Origi who attempts to find Jones with a speculative ball over the top, before the teenager attempts a dummy to return the favour that's well cut-out by the Shrewsbury defence.
Jurgen Klopp’s young side impressed against Everton in the previous round and the promise of Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott may prove too hard to extinguish, despite what will undoubtedly be a battling performance from Rickett’s League One side.
