Shrek fans have just learned startling fact about ogre's accent - 20 years later

Much like Toy Story or Despicable Me, Shrek is one of those iconic animated movies that seems timeless and is bound to make you laugh every viewing without fail.

No matter your age, it's likely you'll always be happy to sit back and watch as the grubby big green ogre saves Princess Fiona, takes her back to his swamp and teases his donkey sidekick along the way.

The movie, starring Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz was released back in 2001 and has inspired several sequels.

But fans of the film have just discovered something rather shocking 20 years on from its release.

It turns out, Shrek wasn't originally going to have that iconic Scottish accent.

Yes, really - our minds are blown too!

Before Myers signed on to voice the ogre, the character was going to be played by the late comedian, Chris Farley.

Farley had been working on the film, but tragically died of a heart attack before finishing it.

Myers, who is Canadian, then was hired in 1999 to replace him. Both used an American style-accent for the film.

However, when Myers saw a draft of the movie in 2000, he decided he didn't like the accent he'd used and asked if he could re-record all of his lines in a Scottish accent.

According to Distractify.com the American accent didn't sit well with Myers and he wanted "Shrek's personality to clash with villain Lord Farquaad, who has a posh English accent".

The edit cost producers a lot of money, but was clearly worth it as the film has made over $484 million at the box office worldwide.

A clip of Chris Farley voicing Shrek has since been shared on YouTube.

Fans say the clip is also available to watch on the Shrek DVD bonus features.
