Showstopper from Björk heads 30-year fashion spectacular

It was widely ridiculed at the time, but has since become an iconic look — and now the swan dress worn by Björk to the 2001 Oscars is going on show in an exhibition celebrating London’s best designers.

It will feature at the Design Museum’s REBEL: 30 Years of London Fashion with other outfits including a replica of Sam Smith’s inflatable latex suit from this year’s Brits.

The exhibition opens to coincide with London Fashion Week. It celebrates 30 years of the British Fashion Council’s NEWGEN programme, which supports new talent.

Among the scheme’s alumni whose designs feature are Erdem, Henry Holland and Grace Wales Bonner.

Other exhibits include the outfit designed by Steven Stokey-Daley for Harry Styles’s Golden video and a Union Jack jacket worn by Kate Moss for Vogue. Björk’s swan dress was designed by Marjan Pejoski.

Design Museum chief executive Tim Marlow said: “Visitors will be stunned by many of recognisable fashion items, but we hope they’ll also be captivated by the breadth, depth and world-class talent that has emerged from London fashion.”

The show, sponsored by Alexander McQueen, opens on September 16.
