Showcase Cinemas operator reports surge in profits after year of major grossing films

Bosses at the firm behind Showcase Cinemas are anticipating future success after it was revealed profits doubled in the last financial year.

NATL Amusements (UK) reported an increase in turnover for the year ended January 3, 2019, from £106.5 million to £109 million.

The firm, which also runs the Cinema De Lux brand and is based in Nottinghamshire , also confirmed post-tax profits of just under £2.5 million, up from £1.2m the previous year.

A report, signed off by the directors, said: "NATL's cinema business is based exclusively in the UK and so it is exposed to UK economic conditions and consumer confidence.

"The company's business and future success depends on the availability of films for screening in its cinemas and appeal of such films to its customers.

"As a leisure activity, cinema may be affected by the general level of consumer spending on leisure activities and may also be affected by changing consumer preferences.

"The directors expect that the present level of activity will be sustained for the foreseeable future."

Over the last 12-month period NATL also reported a rise in attendance figures, up 2.1 percent on the previous year.

The exact number of attendees has not been released by the company, which has a Showcase Cinema De Lux in Lenton, but it has put the rise down to a new cinema, an expansion at an existing site and the number of major grossing films being released.

In recent years the firm has invested in digital and technological innovations, including IMAX and 3D rooms, while upgrades including luxury seating have taken place at various cinemas.

The group operates more than 20 cinemas across the country including at Bluewater in Kent, Leicester, Liverpool and Manchester. The company is part of National Amusements Inc, an American firm which also owns Viacom and CBS.
