Imagine you’re returning home from a long sojourn on the other side of the continent. There’s still salt in your hair, zinc on your nose and, hey, even a bit of sweat between your big toes from your thongs. You rumble with anticipation as the plane nears your hometown – glorious Sydney – and the excitement among all onboard the plane is palpable. In the final moments as the plane approaches the runway, you peek out the window. You’ve already flown over the harbour and seen the bridge, but now the homes and warehouses are quite literally zooming into focus. Suddenly, just two blocks before Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport, you see the words: WELCOME TO PERTH.
Welcome to your worst nightmare, more like.
Yet that’s exactly what one cheeky bugger painted on top of a warehouse right opposite the airport.
With the travel ban firmly in place, it’s not dumb tourists they’re fooling, but rather their fellow countrymen and women. Credit where credit’s due: this was masterfully executed.
Nice welcome sign on approach into Sydney Airport from sydney
Redditors managed to track the location down to a workshop that’s part of Heasman Steering and Suspension in Sydnham.
While the anatopistic mural isn’t yet visible on Google Maps, it’s been around since at least March of this year, according to a Twitter user who claims to have insider knowledge of the ruse.
A mate of mine has painted Welcome to Perth on the roof of his family's workshop, next to Sydney Airport.

One can only imagine how many people have been fooled in the past four months or so.
One Redditor summed it up perfectly: “I am exactly the type of person that would finally manage to get 5 minutes of sleep just before landing, wake up to this dazed and confused and freak the fuck out. Bravo.”
Step aside Sydney Opera House and Big Merino’s big nutsack, NSW has a new iconic landmark. And so does Perth… kind of.
