Should Jets consider Peyton Manning for GM opening?

The New York Jets fired general manager Mike Maccagnan last week and named head coach Adam Gase their interim GM. It’s probably not an ideal situation for Gase to fill two positions, so New York will need to look for a new GM.

One potential candidate to replace Maccagnan could be former NFL quarterback Peyton Manning. The two-time Super Bowl champion is close to Gase — he even recommended the coach to the Jets during their head coach search.

Manning recently turned down an offer from ESPN to serve as a commentator on “Monday Night Football,” and he had “serious discussions” with the Indianapolis Colts about their GM opening in March.

Manning ended up not taking the Colts’ job, but his discussions with the team could be a sign that he’s considering taking a front office job in the NFL.

Manning, 43, retired from the NFL after winning Super Bowl 50 with the Denver Broncos in 2016. He told Peter King in 2017 that he would be interested in “an executive role of some sort,” but only if the situation felt right for him.

Reuniting with Gase, one of his favorite coaches, might feel right to Manning. New York should make a call to find out.
