Should the Eagles have interest in CB Stephon Gilmore after his release from Patriots?

A day after the Cowboys shook up the NFL by releasing veteran linebacker Jaylon Smith, Adam Schefter is reporting that the Patriots are parting ways with All-Pro cornerback, Stephon Gilmore.

The former Defensive Player of the Year has missed time with a quad injury that resulted in offseason surgery and landed him on the PUP list to open the season.

Gilmore sitting out of training camp and landing on the PUP list was characterized as a hold-in in an effort to get a new deal and rather than work things out, New England will let him go.

Gilmore’s contract called for just over $7 million in base salary this season, ranking the CB 24th among all corners in 2021, per Over The Cap.

The Eagles for their part have Darius Slay and Steven Nelson on the roster, and even as the organization approaches a rebuild, the 31-year-old Gilmore could be a key cog in a 2021 playoff run.
