Should the Cardinals re-sign S Tre Boston?

The Arizona Cardinals signed safety Tre Boston to a one-year contract just before training camp. It happened to be one of the very few offseason moves that worked out for the team.

According to team stats based on coaches’ film review, he finished the season with 85 tackles, which was fourth on the team. He led the team with three interceptions and nine broken up passes.

Now he is a free agent again and hoping to cash in.

Should the Cardinals re-sign him?

The Cardinals already have three starting-caliber safeties under contract for 2019 and appear to be set to play only two regularly, as opposed to having three safeties on the field, with one playing in the slot.

They claimed D.J. Swearinger off waivers at the end of last season, something that seemed to suggest Boston might not come back. They still have Budda Baker and Antoine Bethea.

Swearinger will make up to $4.5 million in 2019. Bethea could be cut. Baker is moving back to safety.

Where would Boston fit in?

The Cardinals likely will not seek to re-sign Boston to a multi-year deal. That is what Boston wants, and now he does not have the advantage of coming into a system he knows.

His time in Arizona is probably done, unless Boston’s asking price is too high like last year and there is an injury at safety for the Cardinals.

It comes down to playing time and money. He would not be a guaranteed starter in 2019 and he would not be paid like one.
