The Arizona Cardinals are scheduled to have 23 players hit free agency this offseason. A 24th — receiver Larry Fitzgerald — already re-signed. One player whose contract actually voided is guard Mike Iupati.
He had a contract that went through 2019 but redid his deal so that the final year voided.
Should he be re-signed?
Probably not.
Since signing with the Cardinals in 2015, he has never played a full season. He has landed on injured reserve each of the last two seasons.
He will be 32 when the season begins and has no ties with the current coaching staff.
The Cardinals want to upgrade and need to upgrade at left guard, where Iupati has played.
His play steadily slipped since his first season in 2015 when he made the Pro Bowl. He is on the wrong side of 30 and he has been injury-prone.
Iupati is a great teammate and a good man. However, it is time for the Cardinals to move on.
