Should the Cardinals re-sign Benson Mayowa?

One of the few free agent signings from 2018 that was not a complete failure was defensive end Benson Mayowa. He will be a free agent once more.

He finished the season with 38 tackles, four sacks and 13 tackles for loss, which was second on the team.

He was consistently productive against the pass and the run, which was a surprise because he had the reputation of being a player who was not good against the run.

Moving back to a 3-4 defensive scheme, things could be tough for a Mayowa return. He has never played anything other than 4-3 defensive end. He has the body type to be able to play OLB in a 3-4, but he has never done it.

Having already signed Brooks Reed, if he is looking to get playing time, it will be tough. Chandler Jones plays a lot. Reed could start or be a backup. If the Cardinals select Nick Bosa or Josh Allen first overall, they will be expected to play.

If they could re-sign Mayowa to a similar one-year deal, it wouldn’t hurt, but between the scheme change and what role he would likely have in 2019, it probably would be better.
