Should the Broncos trade for Cam Newton?

The Broncos have no plans to trade star outside linebacker Von Miller, and as of Thursday evening, general manager John Elway had not talked with coach Vic Fangio about potentially trading cornerback Chris Harris or wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders.

What about trading for a player, though? Some fans in Denver have suggested that the team should trade for Panthers quarterback Cam Newton. Kyle Allen has gone 4-0 with Newton sidelined by injury, which has led to speculation that Carolina might be willing to part ways with Newton before he becomes a free agent in 2021.

So should the Broncos give the Panthers a call? Here’s a quick look at the pros and cons of trying to acquire Newton.

The pros: He has reasonable salary cap hits of $23.2 million and $21.1 million over the next two years and is one of the hardest QBs in the league to defend. Newton might be the QB Denver’s offense has been searching for.

The cons: Newton has an ugly history of injuries, and the Broncos wouldn’t keep him and Joe Flacco, so the team would have to eat some dead money to get Flacco off the roster. Newton is also 30 years old, so he would just be another temporary solution to the team’s QB problem.
