Should Sunderland go all out to sign Jordan Jones from Rangers this summer?

Sunderland fans thought they'd secured quite the coup when Jordan Jones signed from Rangers prior to deadline day.

He arrived from Ibrox looking to rebuild his career after breaching Covid-19 regulations by attending a party and in turn, fell out of favour with Steven Gerrard.

For the 26-year-old it was the chance to move back to his native North East with the Black Cats and get game vital time.

Jones has played the majority of his career in Scotland with Kilmarnock and Rangers and was tipped to " stroll it in League One " following the move.

But how has he fared and should Lee Johnson delve into the Sunderland coffers to make his stay a permanent one?

Jones made 21 appearances for Sunderland scoring three times and claiming four assists.

He'll be fondly remembered for his performance against Portsmouth at Fratton Park where he grabbed the game by the scruff on the neck, scoring his second goal for the club and an assist for Charlie Wyke.

The Middlesbrough-born winger has shown he's got the quality to produce moments of magic from nothing - see his first goal for the club against Crewe for reference. After a number of substitute appearances and one start against Shrewsbury, the goal against the Alex thrust him to the forefront of Lee Johnson's plans.

Injuries meant he missed games against Accrington, Lincoln and Bristol Rovers, but he returned to dazzle against Oxford United.

However, as Sunderland's slump began, so did Jones.

His first-half performance against the eventual League One title winners Hull, was a great example of what he is capable of. But, he struggled to get into the game in the second half and was substituted with ten minutes of the game remaining.

It's probably best to describe his time on Wearside as a frustrating one. There have been glimpses of brilliance but it hasn't been on a consistent enough basis to warrant a definite reason to sign Jones from the Gers.

Of course, with a full pre-season under Lee Johnson and if he was to remain injury free, Jones could easily kick on and help Sunderland get to the Championship.

With a reported asking price of £600k, which is a drop in the ocean in today's transfer market, the Black Cats could well be tempted to make an approach.

Johnson has spoken on a number of occasions about being smart in the transfer market, and having seen Jones up close this season, it could be a shrewd piece of business if he is able to get him firing on a consistent basis.

However, there's been question marks over a return to Wearside after he was left on the bench for the second-leg against Lincoln, with the Black Cats in need of a vital aggregate equaliser.

They could also face competition from local rivals Middlesbrough, who were reportedly keen on taking the winger back to Teesside.

Jones came through the youth set-up at Boro and Neil Warnock is believed to be a fan.
