Social workers should be individually graded in inspections, according to the former president of the Association of Directors of Children’s Services.

Speaking at a debate on the social work recruitment crisis, Alan Wood said: “We are resistant to the idea some social workers are better than others.

“We should look to have gradings of individual staff members as part of inspections, but not in simplistic one word judgments.”

Wood is now director of children’s services at the London borough of Hackney. His comments were reported by social care website Community Care.
