Should Seahawks reunite with CB DeShawn Shead?

In the post-Legion of Boom era, the Seattle Seahawks are grooming two young players – Tre Flowers and Shaquill Griffin – to take over at the outside cornerback positions for the foreseeable future.

The team also drafted two safeties, Marquise Blair and Ugo Amadi, both of whom project to be a big part of Seattle’s future secondary. Blair will eventually settle in at either free or strong safety, while Amadi could play either – or he could take over Justin Coleman’s old spot at nickelback.

While the future is bright, Seattle’s current depth in the secondary is rather thin, even after signing veteran Jamar Taylor.

One way the Seahawks could add depth, while also giving fans a taste of the glory days of the LOB, would be to sign veteran free agent DeShawn Shead.

Shead spent the first six seasons of his NFL career with the Seahawks after going undrafted out of Portland State. An injury-plagued 2017 season led to his release, and he spent 2018 with the Lions, playing 12 games (starting one) and recording 18 combined tackles.

Shead would give Seattle a versatile defensive back who has played nearly every position in the secondary. He would immediately challenge both Flowers and Griffin for their jobs while also providing competition at the nickel cornerback position as well.

Even if he doesn’t earn a job out of camp, having him around for the summer will provide a positive impact on the younger guys because he is familiar with the defense and can help push them to get better.

However, with a thin crop of defensive backs on the roster, a healthy Shead has a good chance of winning a roster spot for the 2019 season.
