Should Seahawks pursue unretired CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie?

The Seattle Seahawks, and any other NFL team looking for help in the secondary this offseason, just saw another option come across the table.

Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, an 11-year-veteran who played in seven games for the Raiders last season before retiring in October, has announced he intends to play again in 2019.

At just 32 years old, and two seasoned removed from a season where he recorded six interceptions, Cromartie should draw interest as a veteran who can come into camp and compete for a backup role while pushing the starters for their jobs.

For Seattle, Cromartie could be of interest for that exact reason. Tre Flowers and Shaquill Griffin aren’t going anywhere, but the rest of the depth at cornerback is set to hit free agency, including Justin Coleman, Neiko Thorpe, Akeem King and Kalan Reed – not to mention free safety Earl Thomas, who is unlikely to return.

Cromartie would give Seattle a proven piece to serve as a roving backup to both Flowers and Griffin, while potentially filling in as a nickel back should Seattle be unable to retain Coleman at his asking price.

Of course, Cromartie comes with some baggage, something Seattle has never been afraid of in their pursuit of the best possible team (see Mychal Kendricks).

Cromartie’s asking price is not expected to be exorbitant, and if Seattle is looking for ways to save some money while adding some depth in the secondary, he might be their man.
