Should Seahawks pursue defensive tackle Gerald McCoy?

The Seattle Seahawks are never ones to be content with their roster, often making moves late into the summer if they think it will help them compete in the upcoming season.

That has often lead to shrewd free agent signings just before or even during training camp. One player who could fit that bill this season is defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, who is going to be released by the Buccaneers, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Even after signing both Al Woods and Jamie Meder, and drafting DeMarcus Christmas, the Seahawks could use more help on the defensive interior to pair with Jarran Reed and Poona Ford. McCoy would give them just that.

The 31-year-old made six straight Pro Bowls between 2012-2017, including earning an All-Pro nod in 2013. While his numbers may have slipped a little last year, he still managed six sacks, 17 solo tackles and 21 quarterback hits in 14 games played.

His overall grade of 78.6 from Pro Football Focus ranked No. 30 out of 129 interior defenders last season, a good sign that he is still among the best in the league on the inside.

Tampa Bay cut McCoy to clear cap space, as he would have cost $13 million against the cap. The Seahawks, however, have the requisite cap space to get a deal done, even if they plan to extend Bobby Wagner this summer.

McCoy would immediately give Seattle a veteran presence on the defensive interior, and along with Reed and Ford would form a very intimidating unit for opposing teams.
