Twice a week we publish problems that will feature in a forthcoming Dear Jeremy advice column in the Saturday Guardian so that readers can offer their own advice and suggestions. We then print the best of your comments alongside Jeremy’s own insights. Here is the latest dilemma – what are your thoughts?
My son graduated in English from Cambridge a year ago. While there, he and others made about three short films. He now says he desperately wants to get into the film world. He nearly got one job in London but was pipped at the post by someone with better film qualifications.
Should he continue to apply for jobs as they come up (few replies to his CV) or should he go to film school (expensive and lasting two years) to get a qualification and, presumably, some contacts?
I wonder whether the limited experience as a student of this, or any other, field is enough to make such a career choice? Should he hedge his bets a little and try this field alongside other things? Or is commitment to one area the key when leaving university?
