Should Kevin Phillips have played more for England? Alan Shearer and Ian Wright discuss

In 2000, Sunderland forward Kevin Phillips was the talk of European football.

Not only had he ended the 1999/00 Premier League season as top scorer, despite Sunderland playing in Division One the season before, he also won the European Golden Shoe.

Phillips ended the season in England's EURO 2000 squad but he would not feature in any of England's three group games in the Netherlands and Belgium before they were eliminated.

In total, Phillips made eight international appearances for England but failed to find the net for the Three Lions.

But should he have played for his country more?

That was the question posed by England legend Gary Lineker to former England forwards Alan Shearer and Ian Wright on the latest Match of the Day Top 10s podcast.

Shearer, who captained England at EURO 2000, felt Phillips was a victim of tough competition while at his peak. Meanwhile, Wright sympathised with Phillips having similarly struggled to break through for England on a regular basis.

"It was tough with the players that were in and around when he was playing, " Shearer said when asked whether Phillips should have played for England more.

"He never scored for England but got a few caps."

Wright added: "He deserved his chance. I found it very tough with England.

"When I got involved you [Lineker] were there doing your stuff. Then when I thought I was going to get a sniff, Al [Shearer] comes in.

"Then Michael Owen comes in and you think 'well I'll just hang in there' but that's what happened for players like me and Kevin.

"When you have a main man already there like you or Shearer or Owen then Wayne Rooney, then Harry Kane, then it is difficult."
