Should Jets go after disgruntled Redskins LT Trent Williams?

All is not well with Trent Williams and the Washington Redskins.

Dating back to last year, Williams and the organization have not seen eye to eye. The seven-time Pro Bowler was not happy with how Washington’s medical team handled his cancer scare, forcing him to go to his own doctors before he underwent surgery to remove a precancerous growth on his scalp. Williams is also unhappy with his current contract situation.

These factors have culminated in Williams’ decision to hold out of training camp. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the expectation is that Williams’ holdout will be a lengthy and complicated one as the two sides work to resolve their issues.

Other reports indicate that Williams’ relationship with the Redskins and team president Bruce Allen is “fractured” beyond repair. If that is indeed the case, Washington could look to move its All-Pro left tackle before the beginning of the regular season. The team signed Corey Robinson on Saturday, giving them a contingency plan if they do elect to move on from Williams.

If Williams becomes available, the Jets should be one of the first teams to give the Redskins a call. He would be an upgrade over incumbent starter Kelvin Beachum and rookie Chuma Edoga, who still has plenty of learning to do before he can be considered for a larger role on the offensive line.

Given Williams’ displeasure with the Redskins, New York might not have to give up a lot to get him either. If Williams is serious about not suiting up for Washington, general manager Joe Douglas would not have to give up an arm and a leg to acquire him. This would be ideal for the Jets, as they can hold onto draft capital that they likely otherwise would’ve had to part ways with under normal circumstances.

Beginning on the day he was hired, Douglas has preached that he will do everything in his power to upgrade all positions. Exploring the possibility of a trade for Williams wouldn’t be a bad place to start.
