Should Giants attempt to acquire Julio Jones?

Now that we know Dave Gettleman will be retained as the New York Giants’ general manager for the 2021 season, he can start to game plan for the upcoming year.

We know Gettleman likes to make daring and bold trades. Some don’t always work out, like Alec Ogletree for example. Others work wonders, like Leonard Williams.

Should Gettleman do it again?

It’s no secret that the Giants need a true No. 1 wide receiver. Darius Slayton is very good. Sterling Shepard is good. Dante Pettis showed flashes of being good, and when he’s not frustrating the fan base, Evan Engram can be good.

But Daniel Jones needs a true game-changing wide receiver — that bona fide ace in the open field to be his ultimate go-to. So why not call up the Atlanta Falcons, who are in the midst of major change, and check on the cost of Julio Jones?

Jones appeared in just nine games due to a hamstring issue this past season, but still managed to record 51 receptions for 771 yards and three touchdowns for a struggling Falcons team.

Matt Ryan has also been the subject of trade talks, so he could be on the way out. And with a new GM and coach in Atlanta, they could look to tear it down and start fresh, in which case, Jones’ name looks attractive.

Jones has three years and $38 million left on his current deal and given his production since 2014, that would be a good buy right now for the Giants.

At 31 years old, Jones wouldn’t cost the Giants a first round pick and maybe not even a second round pick. But a third rounder? Maybe even a fourth or fifth rounder for Jones? Given the state of Falcons’ franchise right now, how could they say no?

The Giants are in a state where they can afford to make a move like that for their offense. Jones needs a top receiver and the best one in the NFL Draft is Alabama wide out and 2020 Heisman Trophy winner Devonta Smith, who likely won’t be on the board at No. 11.

Whatever the case may, Giants are inching closer and closer to becoming a playoff team. Having a target like Jones for Jones (pun possibly intended) to throw to for the next three years could be enough to tip that needle.

Will Gettleman once again be daring and bold? Should he be?
