After going 4-1 last season, Broncos quarterback Drew Lock will enter 2020 as Denver’s undisputed starter.
Many fans have high expectations for Lock and the Broncos’ offense. With several rookies, a new offensive coordinator in Pat Shurmur and limited offseason work, Denver might initially struggle to live up to those lofty expectations.
“They’re definitely tempered,” Broncos general manager John Elway said of expectations for Lock on July 28. “I don’t think we can expect with no offseason for us to come out and be hitting on all cylinders. I know that we have spent a lot of time in Zoom meetings and Pat and his staff on the offensive side have spent a lot of time with it, but there’s nothing like being on the practice field. It’s going to be a slow build.
“The expectations of Drew — I mean, he did play well for five games, but that was only five games last year. He didn’t have the offseason this year, which for young football players is always very, very important.”
It’s reasonable to assume Lock should show improvement this season — it’s also reasonable to assume he will have some growing pains. Fans shouldn’t get too upset if the offense gets off to a slow start this fall. With time, Lock and his teammates will get on the same page. Fans need to give them time.
