'Should be banned from ever calling a cab again': readers react to taxi driver abuse

Readers reacted with disgust to two thugs who racially abused the driver of a private hire vehicle after he refused to pick up an illegal fare.

The driver shared a video of the incident, which happened while he was waiting to pick up a fare close to New Brighton promenade in the early hours of Sunday, July 25.

The man, who asked not to be named, was approached by two men who tried to open his locked doors and offered him up to £50 to take them to Birkenhead.

Unlike hackney cabs which can be hailed down in the street, private hire vehicles can only take pre-booked passengers.

After repeatedly refusing the mens' increasingly insistent demands, the driver was subjected to a string of racial abuse.

These were some of the comments made by ECHO readers.

Nellytheelephant: "No place for racism… The guy was just doing his job and this is what you get when two muppets don’t get their own way."

ScaryPoppins said: "If this is you or if this is your son, you should be ashamed and disgusted. Should be banned from ever calling a cab again.

hitch1 said: "Deadbeats roaming the streets, getting worse."

NewshoundMutt said: "Taxi drivers should be awarded medals in this day and age. Full of respect for them."

One said: "I did 10 years of nights hackney working until 6 or 7 in the morning on the weekends. Fortunately I'm in a position where I don't have to anymore, however I do really respect the men and women who do the graveyard shifts.

"To be honest the vast majority of fares were absolutely fine and even though many were rather drunk they just wanted to get home. Sadly we really only remember the dregs of society."

Andosmate said: "Disgusting vile behaviour even full of drugs or booze is no excuse, I hope he’s identified and jailed for hate crimes."
