Should 16 and 17-year-olds be allowed to vote in the General Election? Daily Record readers have their say

Lowering the voting age in Britain would add around 1.4 million teenagers to the electoral roll.

Opposition parties made an attempt to bring in legislation to give 16 and 17-year-olds the right to vote before the snap General Election was called for December 12, but there was not enough time.

It was first reduced by Harold Wilson's Labour government in 1969 from 21 to the current 18., but many people think it should be lowered further.

In Scotland, the voting age was lowered to 16 to allow teenagers to vote in the Independence Referendum in 2014.

However, a bill to lower voting age across the UK was knocked back in 1999 and 2005 by MPs.

As Scots head to the polls for a winter election, we asked Daily Record readers their views on giving under 18s voting rights.

Both Jamie Miller and John Alexander Symington agree the age should be lowered as teenagers are considered adults in other areas of life.

Mr Miller said: "I joined the Royal Navy at 16 and went to the Falklands to patrol in Type 42 Destroyer when I was 17.

"Seems slightly distorted that the government will let me sign official secrets act and a 22 year contract at 16 but not vote."

And Mr Symington added: "I once wrote to Donald Dewer regarding this, yes they should get the vote as you can join armed forces, marry, work, pay national insurance, go to jail etc, but we can't trust them to vote in an adult manner, and it's a bit strange they can do everything bar vote."

Meanwhile Linsey Smith believes some teens have more "common sense than those sitting in the House of Commons just now".

And Trisha Boyle thinks it is their future so they should be allowed a say.

However, on the opposite side, many Scots believe the voting age is fine as it is at 18.

Kevin Monaghan said: "No far to immature. Where does it stop. What happens if you are 16 on 13th Dec they cannot vote. It's just tough. Wouldn't object if it went back to 21 years old."

Reader June Mccoll agrees saying the age should not have been 'lowered for the referendum either'.

Kevin E. Kearney added: "Not wishing to Americanized it. But the old slogan. No Taxation without representation, should stand."
