Shotts youngsters ensure wet weather doesn't curtail there fun with muddy boots sessions

Kids are having a splashing time at GBT Shotts Muddy Boots sessions.

The weekly gatherings, which are aimed at primary one to primary four children, allow youngsters to get out and explore their local wildlife and community.

Organised by GBT’s Early Years and Youth Development support worker Ashley Tweedie, the sessions have proved to be a great success.

Ashley said: “We have run this for a few years now and we are on our second block since lockdown this year.

“Basically we just take the kids and explore the environment around them.

“We will do things like bug hunts, scavenger hunts, get the kids to spell their names out with acorns.

“We also do risk assessments with them where we get them to think about safety. This would be things like thinking if it is safe to climb a tree, or jump in a puddle.”

The sessions run for four weeks at a time, and usually have 12 kids out exploring at a time.

Ashley said: “The kids seem to just love being out and exploring.

“They have wee competitions with each other to see who can splash the highest in puddles, or who can get the muckiest.

“They have great fun when they are out.”
