Shotts without boss for Irvine Victoria clash after positive Covid test

Shotts will be without manager John McKeown for this weekend's visit to Irvine Victoria after he tested positive for Covid.

Assistant Martin Devlin is now set to take the side, who appear to have avoided being struck down by the virus themselves after returning negative tests earlier this week.

McKeown was in charge as Shotts ran out 1-0 winners at home to Girvan in Saturday's West of Scotland League Conference A clash thanks to Danny Burns' second half strike, but the former Cumnock gaffer was struck down by the virus on Sunday and is currently self-isolating for 10 days.

Devlin said: "John tested positive on Sunday. I've done my test and I'm fine, so are the other boys that have tested.

"It puts the big man out of this weekend's game and we wish him a speedy recovery, but the rest of the squad should be okay."

Shotts' win keeps them two points clear of Arthurlie at the top of the table, but they have played three games more.

After losing to their rivals last week, Devlin was just delighted to see Shotts return to winning ways.

He added: "It was a disappointing result to Arthurlie last week so after that it was just a case of making sure we got the three points and putting a run together again.

"The ball is very much in Arthurlie's court so it's about us trying to keep them on their toes and keep winning.

"As much as we never played well on Saturday, the win was vital.

"It's hard to be critical of the guys after going on a run from the middle of August of winning games, scoring goals and keeping clean sheets.

"Hopefully we can build on it this weekend at Irvine.

"The guys have been playing a lot of games and it will be important for us to utilise the squad as much as possible.

"There's guys who have been waiting for their opportunity and they'll probably get it over the next few weeks.

"It's a nice problem to have.

"We will look to freshen things up and hopefully that sparks a bit of energy back into the squad."
