Shotts student set to compete at prestigious comp

Wall and Floor Tiling apprentice from Shotts has been chosen to represent Team UK at the world’s most prestigious skills competition.

Mark Scott, 21, has been selected to compete in the tiling category at the WorldSkills 2019 competition in Kazan, Russia.

The City of Glasgow College student and former Calderhead High School pupil made it through the tough qualifying heats to earn a spot in Team UK for the global competition.

Mark joins fellow Super College student Konnar Doyle in Team UK for this year’s competition.

To make the team, Mark had to balance his job, studies and the many hours of training required to hone his skills to an international competition level.

Mark has enjoyed previous success in skills competition including winning a gold medal at the 2017 UK Skills Show.

In Kazan, he will have to utilise skills gained during his apprenticeship as he competes against opponents from around the world.

WorldSkills Kazan 2019 brings together competitors from more than 60 countries who will compete against each other in 56 different skills categories.

The competition runs between 22-27 August.

Mark said: “I’m really excited to be part of Team UK for WorldSkills.

“Having the opportunity to go to Russia and compete against other apprentices and to represent my county and my college is something I’m really proud of.”
