Shotts mum dodges jail term despite wrongly claiming £30,000 in benefits

A Shotts mum who admitted wrongly claiming £30,000 in benefits has dodged a prison sentence.

Kerrieann Wallace, 35, of Currieside Place, told officials she was a lone parent with no means of support.

The truth was she lived with her partner who had a full-time job and was paying the bills.

Wallace appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week.

She admitted claiming benefit totalling £30,136 to which she wasn’t entitled between March 2013 and January 2018.

The court heard that over the near five-year period she received child benefit totalling £17,794 and housing benefit amounting to £12,331.

After studying a criminal justice social work report, Sheriff Douglas Brown decided not to jail Wallace.

Instead, she was ordered to carry out 220 hours of unpaid community work within 18 months.

The sheriff also imposed an electronic tagging order which prevents Wallace from leaving her home between 7pm and 7am each day for the next seven months.
