Shotts is one of the most affordable places in the UK to buy a house with average price of £94,000

Shotts is one of the most affordable places in the UK to buy a house, according to one property website.

Zoopla has revealed the most affordable places to buy a property in the UK by analysing average property prices, alongside the average earnings in more than 1,000 UK towns to reveal a price to earnings ratio.

This ratio reveals the number of salaries it would take to afford a property in each town.

And Shotts finished 18th on the list with an average property price of £94,000 – the average salary being in the town being £30,000.

The town is also the ninth cheapest place to buy a home in Scotland.

Zoopla’s survey comes a week after it was revealed an application was submitted to build almost 100 new homes and three shops at a site to the East of Calder Drive in the Torbothie area.

It is hoped that 28 of the proposed properties in Shotts will be for social rent.

The man behind the plans, former Shotts councillor Tommy Cochrane, insisted the town was ideal for housing developers due to its location.

Speaking to the Wishaw Press earlier this month, Mr Cochrane said: “Shotts is a prime area for development, with the new high-speed electric train service to Glasgow and Edinburgh and its proximity to the motorway it is ideal for commuting.

“We would like to see more industrial development in the town as it is ideally placed in the centre of Scotland, the increase in the population of the town will only contribute to the interest of companies looking to move to the town to set up a business.

“I am looking for industrial or large services companies who would like to make Shotts their home.

“The site at Torbothie would not be the place for this sort of development due to having to access the site through residential communities.”

Plans for over 100 new homes at Springhill Farm have also been submitted to the council’s planning department.
