Shotts hit Saltcoats for seven despite 'write-off' pitch in 'monsoon' weather

Shotts Bon Accord boss John McKeown says his side’s Hannah Park surface was in no fit condition on Saturday - making their 7-0 win over Saltcoats Victoria even more impressive.

McKeown’s men kept the pressure on West of Scotland Football League Conference A leaders Arthurlie in a demolition job brought on by Josh Watt and Martin Shiels doubles.

Craig Hastings, Paul McGeouch and Martin Cassells finished off the scoring to keep Shotts second in the division and a point off top.

Due to host Ardeer Thistle in the Kilmarnock Pie West of Scotland Football League Cup second round on Saturday, McKeown says a venue alteration may be needed after Hannah Park took a pounding of wind and rain on Saturday.

He said: “It was some of the toughest conditions I have had to manage a team in. It was wild. The pitch was fine to start with but by the end it was a write-off.

“We had the usual Shotts monsoon of lashing rain and hailstones.

“The referee was touch and go whether to keep it going but I think he made the right decision in keeping us playing.

“The damage was already done to the park. We’ve got the cup this week but we might need to ask to move it elsewhere.

“I can’t imagine there being a game on Hannah Park this Saturday unless the groundsman can perform a miracle.”
