Shotts have faith in Junior Cup upset after two-goal comeback against Hurlford earns replay

Shotts Bon Accord boss John McKeown reckons his players have the belief to dispatch Hurlford after their shock Junior Cup comeback.

Bonny fell two-goals behind to the Ayrshire giants before Danny Burns and Craig Hastings levelled the game to secure a replay against the Premiership title-challengers.

Ahead of the replay at Blair Park this weekend, boss McKeown said his team, who compete in the division below their hosts, believe they can pull off an upset against a side he reckons are amongst the best Junior outfits in Scotland.

He said: “At 2-0 down I would have bitten your hand off for a draw, but after we scored, in my view it was all one-way traffic.

“I felt that throughout the game we had the best opportunities to go and win it and should have put the tie away.

“I am absolutely delighted with the boys that they managed to come back from that.

“With 13 minutes gone we are 2-0 down but come back for the draw. And we probably should have beaten one of the top three Junior sides in the country.

“Last season in the cup competitions, I didn’t think we did ourselves any justice.

“Now we have gone up against one of the biggest Junior sides in Scotland and got a great result.

“We had chances late in the game that we probably should have taken to win the tie, but they will probably say the same thing.

“We have a good chance one on one with the goalkeeper in the closing stages and that would have seen us through.

“They controlled the early stages of the game and maybe could have been up by more before we got going.

“I don’t want to get carried away though with how we ended the game, it’s only half-time but we have proven we can match them.

“We need to go there and play well again, we have to be respectful of the opposition that we are coming up against.”

He continued: “We hadn’t played in a couple of weeks so I think there was an element of ring-rust which led to us going two goals down.

Shotts will now travel to Ayrshire for the replay (Wishaw Press)

“It’s a game that is going to be tight and not as open as the first game at Hannah Park.

“It will be compact with a good crowd down in Ayrshire.

“In the dressing room after the game the boys were buzzing.

“They are really looking forward to the next game.

“It’s great to see that excitement and confidence that they can go and get a result.

“We have one more shot to get into the next round of the cup and they feel like they can do it after that result at home.”
