Shotts financial fears and health risks amid West of Scotland League 'shambles' lead to pull out

Boss John McKeown has branded the West of Scotland League a "shambles" after Shotts pulled out of the set-up.

With cash concerns without fans and the use of the social club at Hannah Park growing along with a spike in Covid cases across the country, The Bonny have withdrawn from the conferences.

They become the second team from Lanarkshire, following Cambuslang Rangers, to walk away from tier six and seven.

Auchinleck Talbot, Pollok and Cumnock are among a string of other clubs who will mothball this term.

Gaffer McKeown reckons it didn't make sense for the club to risk health and financial stability to play in a "non-competitive" conference this season, with promotion off the table.

He told Lanarkshire Live Sport : "You are seeing more and more now that teams are having to isolate and teams are catching it.

"We had a chat with the players, the supporters, the sponsors and the committee. The players were great and just wanted to play football as you would understand, but a lot of them are self-employed.

"They were worried about getting an injury for a meaningless game or catching Covid. There are so many mixed opinions.

"We had to take into consideration that our committee guys are older and at a higher risk, and we would be asking them to travel up and down the country.

"The finances and expenses also add up. If you're giving boys even £20 in expenses that's £400 a week for a squad, and that's without referees, insurance, pitch maintenance, and our social club has been closed since March.

"There are so many factors but when you see your Pollok and your Auchinleck's of the world pulling out for safety and because they don't have supporters it shows all clubs at our grade will be impacted.

"Safety wise and financially it seemed like the right decision.

"From the start for us with the West of Scotland League, the goal posts have been moved.

Shotts manager John McKeown (Dominic Cocozza)

"We feel like why should we put ourselves at risk and the club at risk when we have been done absolute no favours and it's been a shambles from the start?

"That's the harsh truth. We had asked to hold off on the season until we can get supporters back in, that was how we voted, or even changing facilties.

"Just now cases are going up so it would have been good to wait until this peak was behind us at least before we started.

"That's not how the clubs voted and all the best to them, we just want to make sure there is a Shotts in the future."
