Shotts eye jumping Arthurlie in table and heaping pressure back on, says boss McKeown

Shotts boss John McKeown hopes to heap pressure on title favourites Arthurlie by going top of the table this weekend.

McKeown’s men hit a magnificent seven on to thrash Lesmahagow 7-0 on Saturday, but they still trail Arthurlie by a point at the top of West of Scotland League Conference A, having played two games more.

However, Arthurlie – who are on a club record 20-game winning run – are in cup action this Saturday, while The Bonny host Bellshill.

So McKeown is determined to get back on top and keep asking questions of their rivals.

He said: “Arthurlie have been relentless but they’ve got a cup match and that gives us the chance to go top again.

“We’ve just got to keep winning games and putting pressure on them.

“Their form has been excellent. They caught us at a good time earlier in the season when we had nine players out injured and then beat us with a dubious penalty decision in the other one.

“They are spending a lot of money and we’ve cut our budget massively, so it’s just one of those things.

“We can only do our best to keep the pressure on them and not give them it easy.

“I keep saying to the boys not to wobble first. Hopefully they have a wee wobble and we’ll see how they react.

“But we’ve been sitting waiting on that for a while!

“Since August our only defeats have been to Arthurlie, but their consistency is incredible so fair play to them.”

Kyle Richford bagged four goals, Ally Martin netted a penalty, while Josh Watt and Paul McGeough were also on target in the rout.

McKeown added: “Seven goals without reply, you’ve got to be happy with that.

“The first half was a close affair but two goals before half-time killed them off.

They had a few players missing and had to play their goalkeeping coach, but you’ve still got to beat what’s in front of you. But the boys were excellent and in good form.”
