Shotts boss delighted with Ardrossan win despite poor performance

Shotts boss John McKeown says beating Ardrossan Winton Rovers despite not playing well is a good sign of his side’s resurgence from a poor start to the season.

An Ally Martin penalty and a strike by Taylor Evans gave Shotts a 2-0 win over Rovers in the West of Scotland Cup first round, adding to a 1-0 win over Benburb on Wednesday, courtesy of a Peter O’Donnell strike.

That’s three slender wins in a week for McKeown’s side, who host Dundonald Bluebell in the South Challenge Cup third round this weekend, with a Junior Cup fourth round tie looming against Arthurlie on December 3.

“It’s our third win in a week, so we can’t complain, but we weren’t very good, to be honest,” he said.

“I made some changes, so it was good to mix up the team and still get through. It was a fantastic week. Benburb was a fantastic result, they’re a right good side who have just come down from the Premier League.

“If you’d offered me three wins in a week I’d have bit your hand off for that.

“The boys are doing great, and are a credit to themselves. After a poor start they’ve really kicked on, so long may it continue.”

McKeown has done a bit of homework on East of Scotland League Premier side Dundonald, but recognises the Fifers from a previous managerial stint.

He said: “They’re a Super Premier team through there, and one of the big guns, so it’s going to be a tough game. I played against them a few years ago when I was manager of Cumnock and they were a right good outfit.

“We’ve hit a good bit of resurgence and in both games we’ve won it by the odd goal, so that’s a good sign.

“That shows that even when we don’t play well, we’re still winning, so it’s a great habit to be in.”
