Shotts boss delighted as returning striker takes goals tally to 100 on return

Danny Burns bagged a hat-trick on his return to Shotts on Saturday, taking his tally for the club to 100 over two spells.

Boss John McKeown says his players were eager to make amends for a 2-0 midweek defeat against Arthurlie and they returned from Girvan with a 4-2 win in the West of Scotland League Conference A. Paul McGeough also netted.

McKeown says he’s patching his side up as best he can, and is looking to bring in a central defender, but is unlikely to do so ahead of a visit by Irvine Vics on Wednesday and a trip to Saltcoats Vics on Saturday.

McKeown said: “I was glad to bounce back from the midweek performance, which was quite poor, but a big part of that was due to personnel missing.

“We got some bodies back, Danny Burns scored a hat-trick on his return, which was great, and that takes him to 100 goals over his couple of spells at Shotts.

“Danny’s good, he’s lightning fast and has a great left-foot finish.

“The boys were looking to make amends for Wednesday night, so it was good to get the win against one of the teams who I think will be up there in the table towards the end of the season.”

McKeown says a punishing schedule is taking its toll, and added: “It just seems to be like that until the end of August, and it's game after game, so you don’t get time to dwell on performances or results.

“The boys are going through a tough schedule after a year without football, so it’s important to have a big squad at this time of the year.

“We're getting bodies back, but we have two on holiday and one just back, so it's one thing after another just now!"

McKeown says he wants to strengthen and will work hard to do so over the coming weeks.

He said: "I’m quite happy with the squad, but I’m probably looking to add one more, a centre-half.

"I only have two there, and it’s really hard with this schedule.

“We’re working hard behind the scenes and hopefully we can get something sorted in the coming weeks."
