Shotts Bon Accord boss targets last-gasp Championship promotion surge

John McKeown hopes his Shotts side can build a late surge and fire their way to promotion.

Bonny sit fifth in the West League Championship , 16 points off second-placed Cumbernauld United , but with five games in hand.

McKeown believes he has a squad that is capable of going for promotion, but needs to get games played.

“Hopefully we can keep in touch with the teams above us, but it’s going to be a busy period ahead.

“If we could go for promotion it would be really big, because we only came up last season.

“The priority was always to stay in the division, but I always knew we had a squad that could compete in this league, and we’ve more than done that.

“If we could get a late surge it would take us right up there, and I definitely think we’re capable of it. We’re not far away as it is at the moment.

“We’ve been unlucky with injuries this season, but hopefully we’ll get them back at the right time, and we will need our whole squad for the period coming up.”

Shotts were left idle at the weekend as their game at St Roch’s fell victim to the weather, with Irvine Vics visiting Hannah Park this weekend.

McKeown said: “We had won three in a row and wanted to keep that run going, which would have got us right up the table, but you can’t control the weather. The stop-start nature of it has been a nightmare, though.”
