Attack Reported at Magazine Office
Danville City Councilman J. Lee Vogler, 38, was doused in petrol and set alight at Showcase Magazine's headquarters around 11:30 am by Hayes, 29, who had allegedly stormed into the workspace carrying a five-gallon container of gasoline, according to publisher Andrew Brooks.
Authorities have stated that Vogler and Hayes were acquainted and that the assault stemmed from a 'personal matter', not Vogler's public rôle. Hayes's wife had filed for divorce just two weeks before the attack. Further details about the nature of their connection remain undisclosed by investigators.
After being set alight, Vogler fled the building but was chased outside, where the suspect ignited the petrol. Vogler was airlifted to a regional burn centre and described by colleagues as 'awake and talking', though officials have not elaborated on his injuries. Hayes initially fled the scene but was apprehended by police a few blocks away without resistance. Charges are expected, pending further investigation.

Vogler's Public Service and Family Life
Vogler made history in May 2012 as the youngest person ever elected to the Danville City Council at age 24. He holds a political science degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and serves as Managing Partner at Andrew Brooks Media Group, publishers of Showcase Magazine.
He was appointed to the Virginia Small Business Commission in July 2022 by Governor Glenn Youngkin. Vogler is married to his wife Blair, with whom he shares two young children; in a recent Facebook tribute he described her as 'so blessed to have you in our lives.'
