Shots fired, plumes of smoke and flipped cars lead to busy Saturday night for 999 crews

Roads were closed and response crews scrambled on a busy night for Merseyside's emergency services.

Saturday evening saw the flames from a Liverpool city centre fire fill the city skyline and shots fired at a Bootle home.

A road was also cordoned off by police in Tuebrook while the Mersey Gateway was temporarily closed when a car flipped on the bridge.

Here is what we know after an incident-packed night across the region.

Bootle Shooting

Part of busy Southport Road, near its Bedford Road junction, was cordoned off by police probing the third shooting in a week on Merseyside.

Reports of the attack emerged around 8.20pm and led to a police helicopter and armed officers being sent to the scene.

Shots were fired at the house in the daylight incident, which saw a front window damaged but in which nobody was injured.

Detectives probing the attack believe two men seen on a scrambler bike at the scene, then later spotted on County Road, could be able to assist the investigation.

Officers have carried out house-to-house enquiries and are said to have obtained CCTV for analysis.

Baltic Triangle Fire

Huge fire breaks out in Liverpool

A fire in Liverpool city centre caused plumes of black smoke that were visible for miles.

The dramatic scene prompted 32 999 calls as worried members of the public contacted Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service.

ECHO readers sent pictures and video showing the billowing cloud obscuring the Anglican Cathedral, while others shared image of the fire itself burning behind red hoardings.

The blaze started around 7pm and, while it looked serious, was actually down to rubbish burning on land off Cookson Street.

While the smoke that resulted may have caused concern, the incident only required the attention of two fire crews.

Witnesses at the scene said the site had been used for fly-tipping recently, with some reporting a white van turning up at the scene and dumping waste.

Mersey Gateway crash

At around 3pm, Cheshire Police began to advise drivers the Mersey Gateway was closed to those heading towards Liverpool.

This was because of an incident said to have begun when a Ford Mondeo, carrying a family with children, broke down on the bridge and came to a halt in the first lane.

The family got out of the vehicle and moved to the side of the carriageway to remain safe.

While the car was abandoned on the bridge, a second vehicle - an Audi A1- careered into the back of the Mondeo.

That car was driven by a 22-year-old woman, who was the only person inside the Audi.

She managed to get out of the car immediately after the crash without the need for an ambulance or the fire brigade.

The woman suffered minor injuries and was taken to Whiston Hospital for treatment.

The fire brigade was dispatched to the scene, with four appliances attending the scene, but only one used.

One of the vehicles was flipped on its roof in the crash, which led to the carriageway being closed for around an hour.

Tuebrook police scene

As well as the Bootle shooting, Merseyside Police was also called to action in Tuebrook last night.

Officers had cordoned off a section of West Derby Road that runs alongside shops and separate to the main carriageway, near the junction with Marlborough Road, at around 9pm.

Two pushbikes and what appeared to be items of clothing lay discarded on the road within the cordoned off area.

The ECHO has approached Merseyside Police for details on the exact circumstances of what was being investigated.

Ellesmere Port crash, Warrington and Burscough fires

Fire crews were also busy just beyond Merseyside, with incidents in Cheshire and West Lancs.

Firefighters were called to the scene of a crash in Chester Road, Ellesmere Port, at 4.43pm on Saturday.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said the 52-year-old female driver was suffering a medical episode, which is thought to have led to the collision. Firefighters were able to administer first aid, which included providing oxygen to the casualty, until paramedics arrived.

Over in Warrington there were fires at the Moore Nature Reserve and woodland off Knutsford Road - a suspected arson caused by setting moped tyres alight.

Officers from Lancashire Police tweeted to say they had been on Orrell Road, Burscough, along with fire crews following an arson at around 9pm.
