Shots fired near Trump's Mar-a-Lago, authorities say

PALM BEACH, Fla. _ Two people are in custody after law enforcement opened fire near President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate following a car chase, according to the sheriff's office.

An SUV breached two security points outside Trump's Palm Beach home, and law enforcement fired their weapons at the vehicle, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said. It was not immediately known which agency those law enforcement officers worked for.

A shop owner near the scene told the Palm Beach Daily News that he saw a woman, who looked to be in her 30s, speeding in a Jeep down South County Road with two Palm Beach Police cars following close behind.

The Jeep reportedly swerved into northbound lanes several times, including at a point in the road where a divider separates the north and southbound lanes, the shop owner said.

A window in her SUV was shattered, he added.

The incident started after a woman left a Palm Beach hotel and started dancing on cars before fleeing, NBC News reports.

The Jeep was seen near The Breakers luxury resort north of Mar-a-Lago and along South County Road.

The Florida Highway Patrol and two PBSO helicopters also were seen following the SUV from above.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the shooting, the sheriff's office said.

Palm Beach County Sheriff's deputies initially turned away all eastbound traffic at Southern Boulevard and South Olive Avenue, just before the bridge to Palm Beach. They reopened the bridge around 1 p.m.

Palm Beach police already had shut down traffic at the Mar-a-Lago checkpoint at South County Road.

About 10 law enforcement officers from different agencies were seen near Mar-a-Lago at about noon. At least three PBSO deputies wore "homicide" vests onsite.

The incident occurred just hours before Trump is expected to arrive at his Palm Beach mansion and club for the weekend.

Trump is expected in Palm Beach County Friday evening _ his 29th visit since his 2017 inauguration.

On Saturday, the president's fan club, the Trumpettes, is holding its gala at the Southern White House with headliner Roseanne Barr. On Sunday, the president is expected to host his annual Super Bowl party at his West Palm Beach golf club.

The incident is the latest in a series of security checkpoint breaches at Trump's Mar-a-Lago.

Last April, Yujing Zhang, a 33-year-old from China, raised red flags when she passed U.S. Secret Service checkpoints and entered Mar-a-Lago with four cellphones, a computer, two Chinese passports, an external hard drive and a thumb drive.

She was convicted of lying to officials to access the property while the president was in town.

In December, another woman, Jing Lu, 56, was confronted by the private club's security officers and told to leave, though she returned to take pictures, authorities said.

In November 2018, a University of Wisconsin student fooled Secret Service and bypassed security using an underground tunnel. It took 20 minutes before he was arrested. The breach happened while Trump was in town for the Thanksgiving weekend.

Earlier in January, a 37-year-old Naples man was arrested for lying to law enforcement to bypass security checkpoints at Palm Beach International Airport about an hour before Trump was set to depart in Air Force One.
