Shots fired in West Belfast at display for former INLA prisoner Martin McElkerney

Shots have been fired in West Belfast as the body of a former INLA prisoner was returned home.

Martin McElkerney died after an incident at Milltown Cemetery on Thursday.

It is understood that his body was returned to the Divis area on Monday.

In videos circulating on social media, masked men can been seen gathering before a volley of shots appear to be fired from a rifle.

The salute was greeted with cheers.

Masked men dressed in white shirts were also seen carrying the coffin, which was draped in a Starry Plough flag.

The 57-year-old was sentenced to life imprisonment for his role as the look-out in an explosion in 1982 which killed two children and a British soldier.

The bomb was detonated at Divis Flats, killing Kevin Valliday, 11, Stephen Bennett, 14, and solider Kevin Waller, 20.

He was released in 1999 under the Good Friday Agreement.
