Two men are being questioned after shots were fired at police during an overnight chase in northern NSW.

Patrol officers attempted to stop a Ford Territory on the New England Highway outside Tamworth around 3am on Saturday after spotting it leaving a fast food restaurant in the town's centre.

When it failed to pull over, a pursuit began through the suburbs of Calala, Nemingha and Kootingal.

Police say a passenger in the vehicle was seen to lean out the window and pointed a firearm at the officers as they followed.

Road spikes were deployed and the Ford crashed through the fence of a golf course in Tamworth about 3.30am.

Two men ran off but were chased on foot and arrested.

During a search of the Ford, police allege they found a shortened firearm next to the front passenger seat and the older of the men was found in possession of ammunition.

Examination of the unmarked police vehicle involved in the pursuit found bullet marks in the bonnet and windscreen.

The men have been taken to Tamworth Police Station where they remain in custody.
