When police attended they found evidence consistent with shots being fired.
No injuries were reported following the incident and an investigation has now been launched.
Officers remain at the scene to carry out CCTV, forensic and house-to-house enquiries.
Detective Inspector John Fitzgerald said: “We are in the very early stages of this investigation and we’re keen to speak to any witnesses or anyone with any information.
“Thankfully there are no reports of injuries, but to fire a gun in a residential area is clearly an extremely reckless and dangerous act which could have led to tragedy.
“We are working to find those responsible and if you were in the Lydiate area in the early hours of this morning and saw anything or anyone suspicious, please get in touch. Any piece of information, however small or insignificant it may seem, could prove vital to our enquiries.
“We will act on all information provided on gun crime to remove weapons and those who use them from the community. Please come forward with what you know, directly or anonymously, and we will do the rest.”
