Shotgun found in house raid as police name suspect

Police have named a suspect after finding a gun and drugs at a house in Wirral.

Detectives carrying out a warrant, at around 7.40pm, on Wednesday, February 9, discovered a shotgun and Class A drugs in a house on Carlton Road, Birkenhead.

Matthew West, who was at the property at the time, was arrested by officers at the scene.

The 49-year-old has now been charged with possession of a shotgun without a certificate and possession of heroin and crack cocaine.

West is due to appear in court this morning, on Friday, February 11.

A spokesperson for Merseyside police service said: "We have charged a Birkenhead man with firearms and drug offences yesterday, Thursday 10 February.


"At around 7.40pm on Wednesday 9 February, police executed a warrant at an address on Carlton Road.

"A firearm and a quantity of Class A drugs was recovered. The firearm was made safe by officers and forensically recovered.

"A 49-year-old man was arrested at the property and taken into custody for questioning.

"Matthew West, aged 49, of Carlton Road, Birkenhead has now been charged with possession of a shotgun without a certificate and possession of Class A drugs (heroin and crack cocaine).

"West has been remanded into custody and will appear at Wirral Adult Remand Court this morning (Friday 11 February)."
