The shortlist for the 2019 Sony World Photography Awards professional contest has been revealed.

Six British photographers were named among the shortlisted entries, who will go on to compete to be named Professional Photographer of the Year across ten categories, there's also a $25,000 prize up for grabs for the overall winner.

The winners will be announced on April 17, and if you're curious to see all of the winning and shortlisted entries for yourself, the artwork will go on display at the Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition at Somerset House in London between April 18 – May 6.

Shortlisted entries include this moving photo below captured by Andrew Kelly (Reuters) in which Ayah, who wears a niqab, weeps as she is embraced by a police officer during a demonstration against the Danish face veil ban in Copenhagen.

As well as the image below, taken by Jasper Doest, of Bob, a Caribbean flamingo from the Dutch island of Curaçao, "whose life took a dramatic turn when he flew into a hotel window, leaving him severely concussed. He was cared for by Odette Doest, a local vet who also runs a wildlife rehabilitation centre and conservation charity," according to the caption.

"Existing disabilities meant Bob couldn’t be released, but instead he became ambassador for FDOC, which educates locals about the importance of protecting the island’s wildlife," it reads.
