Shortlist is announced for the 2019 North East Rural Awards

A shortlist for awards which aim to celebrate the best of the people and businesses of the North East’s rural communities has been announced.

A total of 37 organisations and people have been nominated for prizes at the North East Rural Awards, which take place at Northumberland College’s Kirkley Hall Campus on July 4.

The awards aim to recognise the best of the farming, tourism and business sectors of the North East countryside, as well as the people who make the difference to our rural communities.

The awards are organised by The Journal, with support coming from associate sponsors Northumberland College, plus NFU Mutual, Northumberland National Park, Hay & Kilner and Advance Northumberland.

Journal business editor Graeme Whitfield said: “This is the fourth time we have held the Rural Awards and it’s great to see that people and businesses in our rural communities are as enthusiastic about the event as ever. Every year the shortlist gets stronger and it’s great that the nominees are getting this recognition.

“We know that the rural North East is a truly special place, and that is down to the people who live and work there, plus the businesses that do so much to maintain and enhance our rural communities. We’re looking forward to celebrating what they do at the Rural Awards.”

A spokesman for Advance Northumberland, which is sponsoring the rural diversification award, said: “Advance Northumberland is delighted to be celebrating the success and achievements of North East businesses by sponsoring the Rural Diversification Award.

“Northumberland is a place of huge untapped potential; we have a core of high-performance international companies in a number of key sectors, as well as ambitious small firms and knowledge-based start-up businesses.

“Advance Northumberland has been working tirelessly to support rural businesses in our county. Their excellence, commitment and continued innovation is vitally important to growing our local rural economy.

“Therefore, to demonstrate the real success stories of rural businesses that have made their home in Northumberland this is a fantastic event to showcase what we know they can do.”

Nigel Harrett, principal of Northumberland College, said: “Northumberland College is delighted to be hosting the Rural Awards again this year. Our extensive range of land-based provision and excellent facilities make us the ideal choice for a prestigious rural event, and our staff and students can showcase their expertise to ensure the event is a real success.

“We are pleased to be highlighting the skill and innovation in rural areas and celebrating the people and businesses at the heart of our rural communities across the region.”
